The thesis project explores the historical ethnic cultures of the state of Chiapas to incorporate their relevance into the design of a 21st Century museum. The museum serves to illustrate the culmination of design principles that are based on the review of literature and history of the region of Chiapas, ethnic influences, and contextual influences. Key components are extrapolated from this study to create building blocks for the construction of a new design vernacular.
A review of the ethnic folklore of the region is contemplated as a means of motivation to create elements that are unique and rich in meaning. Deconstruction of the legends of the Popol-Vuh and Kuk are used in the process of symbolization that allow for visual aspects that are both graphic and subtle in nature.
Mayan architecture is studied as a means of revealing its notion of vertical and horizontal structural proportions, rhythm, and openings. The horizontal extension of the museum grounds the building while the repetition of openings creates vertical elements that result in rhythm. The thesis reviews these aspects of design as it integrates them into the character of the museum while creating a new vernacular in architecture.
The diverse ethnic groups of the region are examined for the artistic qualities inherent in their ceramics, pottery and textiles. The thesis draws on these artistic elements as a means of employing them into the aesthetic qualities seen throughout the museum. Venues that are used to display ancient artifacts within the museum are also created from a culturally sensitive standpoint and are the result of their examination as well.
The research studied the specific region of Chiapas and the boundaries of ground, horizon and sky to shape the design of the building. Thus, an architectural structure that interacts with the natural rainforest which it exists in is achieved.
